Opal Card Bug Leaves Hundreds Stranded In Train Stations.
Opal Card
Opal Card
It hasn't been all smooth sailing for passengers who switched to the Opal Card system. It was dubbed a technology that would make things easier. Yet I sit here with a faulty Opal Card with $35 credit on it, and it's useless.
For approximately 3 months multiple bugs have existed in the Opal System, and they still do, either they are not going to fix them or they are taking a very long time to fix them.
Either way these bugs have affected hundreds of people and all Opal is suggesting at the moment is to buy a new card and transfer the credit over. It really points out that the system is not ready to be used, and users should be careful with what information they part with to the Opal system.
We would not be too surprised to find out that another vulnerability was exploited and your information was leaked.
Here are two of the known bugs
  • INVALID SOURCE BUG OP07321 - NOT FIXED
  • BALANCE DELAY BUG OP07427 - NOT FIXED

Invalid Source Bug - OP07321
Summary:
When a user tops up their Opal card from multiple valid sources such as Opal top up stations, over the phone, or Internet the Opal card may register as an attempt to recharge from an invalid source. This then results in the Opal Card being blocked.
Work Around:
There is no work around, once the card is blocked you will need to obtain a new Opal card from a vendor apply some credit on it and then have the credit transferred from your old card to the new card.
This issue will occur again, as the issue is not yet fixed. So be ready to buy multiple Opal cards and transfer multiple times.
Balance Delay Bug - OP07427
Summary:
When a user tops up their Opal card online, the new balance is not transferred after the first tap on and not available for use. This is best described by Gough Lui in his article Problem Opal Top Up Pending Collection
Work Around:
There is no work around, once the card is blocked you will need to obtain a new Opal card from a vendor apply some credit on it and then have the credit transferred from your old card to the new card.

Recommendation
We would recommend that people avoid using the Opal Card System until these issues are fixed. Or be prepared to have to purchase multiple Opal Cards and waste hours transferring credit from old cards to new cards.
Opal have not responded in over almost 2 weeks since the Opal Card Block incident occured with us, and have not resolved the issue for us with our blocked card that still has credit on it.
Opal customer support is one of the worst we have encountered in a while. Every time you are tranferred to another person you are repeating yourself. You even have to read out your Opal Card number despite having to enter it in over the phone before being transferred to a customer service agent.
